Ingredients
  

Onion
  • 1 large Vidalia onion or any sweet onion
Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
Oil
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Slice the onion to create the blooming effect, being careful not to cut through the base.
  2. Soak the onion in cold water for at least 30 minutes.
Batter and Frying
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  2. Dip the soaked onion in the buttermilk, then coat it in the flour mixture.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Carefully place the coated onion in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Remove the onion and drain on paper towels.
Serving
  1. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
