Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tsp black food coloring
  • Gummy spiders for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, mix cake mix, eggs, water, and oil until smooth.
  3. Fill cupcake liners two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  4. While cooling, prepare frosting by mixing in black food coloring until desired shade is reached.
  5. Frost cooled cupcakes generously using a piping bag.
  6. Create the spider web by piping concentric circles with white frosting or melted white chocolate, then drag a toothpick from the center outwards to form the web pattern. Top each cupcake with gummy spiders.
