Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe Bosc or Anjou pears, halved and cored
  • 1 cup red wine (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine red wine, sugar, butter, cinnamon stick, and vanilla. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  3. Add pear halves to the mixture and simmer for about 15 minutes until tender but intact. Remove pears and set aside.
  4. Increase heat to reduce the poaching liquid by half to create syrup.
  5. Pour some syrup into an oven-safe skillet or tart pan. Arrange pear halves on top and cover with puff pastry.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool slightly before inverting onto a serving plate and drizzle with remaining syrup.
