Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 large sweet onions (like Vidalia), sliced
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 4 slices crusty French bread
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Push the onions to one side; add the ground beef in the empty space. Season with salt, pepper, thyme, and garlic powder. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the beef broth with the onion and beef mixture; let simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. In a greased baking dish (9×13 inches), layer half of the beef mixture at the bottom. Top with slices of French bread and half of the Gruyère cheese. Repeat layers.
  6. Cover with foil (shiny side down) and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
