  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 2 cups walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix chopped nuts and cinnamon; set aside.
  3. Layer eight sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Spread half of the nut mixture over the phyllo layers. Add four more phyllo sheets, buttering each.
  5. Repeat with the remaining nut mixture and top with ten more phyllo sheets.
  6. Cut diamond shapes into the top layer before baking for about 45 minutes until golden brown.
  7. For the syrup, boil water, sugar, and honey in a saucepan for ten minutes; pour over warm baklava.
