Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1½ cups chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1. Prepare the dough: In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast; let sit until frothy. In another bowl, mix flour and salt, then add melted butter and eggs. Stir in the yeast mixture.
  2. 2. Knead the dough: Turn onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
  3. 3. Make the filling: Mix chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and brown sugar in a separate bowl.
  4. 4. Roll out dough: Once risen, roll dough into a rectangle about half an inch thick. Spread walnut filling evenly on top.
  5. 5. Shape the babka: Roll the dough tightly into a log and seal edges. Cut lengthwise to reveal swirls and twist pieces together.
  6. 6. Bake: Place in a greased loaf pan and let rise again for about 30 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
