  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 5 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Purple gel food coloring
  • For the Buttercream Frosting: 1 cup unsalted butter (softened), 4 cups powdered sugar, 2 tbsp heavy cream, 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. In another bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients alternately with milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients; mix until just combined.
  5. Divide batter into three bowls; tint one light purple, one medium purple, and one dark purple using gel food coloring.

  7. Stack layers with buttercream frosting in between and frost the outside of the cake.
