Greek Stuffed Onions, or Salantourmasi, are a delightful Mediterranean dish that combines tender onions with a savory filling of ground meat and rice.   • 4 large sweet onions
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh dill
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel the onions, trim the tops, and hollow them out, reserving the onion flesh.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground meat until fully cooked; drain excess fat.
  4. Add reserved onion flesh, rice, parsley, dill, salt, pepper, and cinnamon to the skillet; stir until combined.
  5. Stuff each hollowed onion with the mixture.
  6. Place stuffed onions in a baking dish, pour tomato sauce over them, and add water halfway up their sides.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes; then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes until tender.
